Description

Daeungjeon Hall of Chiljangsa Temple in Anseong was remodeled in 1790 (the 14th year of the reign of King Jeongjo) and rebuilt in 1828 (the 28th year of the reign of King Sunjo). It has historical and academic value as it sheds light on the architectural status of the main hall, which played a central role in the temples of Gyeonggi-do during the late Joseon Period. It is a flamboyant, heavily bracketed structure measuring 3 kan by 3 kan.* It consists of two high interior columns and five crossbeams, and a gable roof, which is an easy form to build and manage, and is typical of the Buddhist temples built in the late Joseon period when Buddhism had been significantly weakened by the Confucian-oriented dynasty. Buddhist architecture in Joseon during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries was characterized by the use of a roof-supporting bracket system, decorative vine motifs, the composition of the interior structure and altar, the 井-shaped ceiling, the use of natural wood for the high and corner columns, and latticework doors and windows on the four walls, among other elements. The stone embankment, stairs, and cornerstones attest to the skills of the stone craftsmen, while the dancheong (traditional Korean decorative painting of wooden buildings and artifacts) with a 3D effect made for plants-shaped decorative pattern left on the the 井-shaped ceiling can hardly be found elsewhere.
