Description

Gyeongsangdo Yeongju Jemyeonggi is a two-volume book containing the list of Gyeongsangdo’s Governors from the Goryeo to the Joseon period. One volume is kept at the Gyeongju National Museum and the other at the Sangju Hyanggyo (currently kept in trust at the Sangju Museum). Work on the book was begun by HA Yeon (1376-1453) in 1426 (the 8th year of the reign of King Sejong) and continued until 1718 (the 44th year of the reign of King Sukjong), when Yi Jip entered official service as the governor of Gyeongsang-do. It is a very rare example of a list of provincial governors that was kept and maintained over a very long period of time (640 years). In his foreword to the book, HA Yeon states that in 1426, one year after his inauguration as provincial governor, he drew up the list of his predecessors from 1078 to 1423. This is the book kept at the Gyeongju National Museum. The other book (kept at Sangju Hyanggyo), which was compiled by Kim Jinam in 1622 (the 14th year of the reign of King Gwanghae) based on the first one, lists all the governors of Gyeongsang-do, starting with Yi Jewon in 1078 and ending with Yi Hojun in 1886, a period of 808 years. The records state that it used to be kept at Sangju-mok. This two-volume book has considerable historic and academic value as it is an extremely rare work, is the oldest extant book of its kind, and contains an almost complete record of the governors of a province.
