Description

The Gaya National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage conducted a survey of the Ancient Tomb Site at Magapchong in Haman in 1992, and discovered horse armor and a sword with a ring pommel while excavating the tomb’s wooden coffin. These relics are thought to originate from fifth-century Ara Gaya based on a comparison with other dated relics excavated at the same time. Notably, the pieces of armor for the horse’s head and body and the rider’s neck and chest are particularly well preserved, unlike the many badly preserved similar relics found to date in Gaya tombs, whose original forms are often virtually unidentifiable. excavated on the left and right of the tomb’s occupant, these artifacts will greatly assist our understanding of the burial culture of the Gaya Period. In particular, the traces of metal forging and the use of inlaying and repoussé techniques shed attest to the refined craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibility of the people of Gaya. These are important relics from the perspective of history, academic research, and technological progress, as they shed light on the development and exchange of advanced production techniques and the use of metal weapons and armored cavalry in East Asia.
