Description
The pair of gold earrings from Tomb Okjeon-28 in Hapcheon was excavated by a team from the Gyeongsang National University Museum in 1985-1986. They are regarded as a valuable cultural heritage as they are rare and well-preserved artifacts that shed light on the culture of burial accessories and Gaya earrings generally, and are also the most flamboyant of all Gaya earrings with a decorative chain discovered so far. Looking at the technique used to make the earrings, they feature a long chain link unlike those made in Silla. Usually, earrings dating from Gaya have a hanging accessory linked to the thin main ring, but these have three strings of hanging accessories and bead-shaped middle ornaments, with cone/heart-shaped embellishments dangling from their bottom. These gold earrings are important representative artifacts of the kingdom of Gaya (5th century), whose metal handicraft skills exerted considerable influence on Japan. They are worthy of designation and preservation as a Treasure in recognition of their academic and artistic value, and the fact that they are a complete set in a good state of preservation originating from a known burial site.
