Description

This is the portrait of State Preceptor Daegak (a.k.a. Uicheon, 1032-1083) during the Goryeo Dynasty. Originally born as the fourth prince of King Munjong, he established the Cheontae Order in order to unify the Buddhism of the Goryeo Dynasty. Measuring 110.2 cm wide and 144 cm long, this portrait is painted in color on silk. State Preceptor Daegak is sitting on a chair looking to the right, holding a long stick in his left hand, and grasping the handle of the chair with the short Buddhist rosary around the wrist of his right hand. His profound learning and self-discipline are expressed very well through his wide forehead, big nose and ears, closed lips, and bright, meditative eyes. He is wearing green outer vestment that adopts the golden color of the round ring instead of a knot. This portrait was modified in 1805 (fifth year of the reign of King Sunjo of the Joseon Dynasty) by a Buddhist monk named Doil and is regarded as one of the masterpieces among the Buddhist paintings made in the Goryeo Period because it clearly shows the characteristic style of the Buddhist paintings of those days. A writing by Hyegeun makes this portrait even more valuable. Despite the stain caused by moisture and the slight damage on the curved part, the painting has been generally well-preserved.
