Description

Designed to harmonize with nature, Suseonru Pavilion was built into a rock cave in 1686 (the 12th year of the reign of King Sukjong) and subsequently renovated in 1888 and 1892. A two-story structure measuring 2 kan* (façade) by 1 kan (sides), it is notable for a number of novel architectural details hitherto unseen at that time, such as the upraised lintel, exposed rafters without a separate ceiling, the use of space between the rocks to form the entrance, and the contrast between light and dark felt upon entering it. As it was built into natural rock, part of the lower side is composed of rocks, and the entrance to the lower side is naturally linked to the upper side by a unique spatial arrangement. As for the roof, its front side is covered with roof tiles, while the rear side is covered with stone shingles, a characteristic feature of local architecture.
