Description
Used as a ritual vessel during the late Joseon Period, this white porcelain jar has height of 27.8 cm, mouth diameter of 9.5 cm, and base diameter of 11.8 cm. It has a design of a mountain with three peaks and lightning. The mouth is drooped inward, whereas the shoulder is widely open. The vessel is swollen in the upper area, gradually narrowing as it comes down and slightly widening again at the heel. Attached on both sides at the boundary between the mouth and the shoulder area is a bow-shaped ear. There is also a round ring in each ear, suggesting that the vessel is patterned after a similar vessel made of bronze. The shoulder is rounded with a band of lightning designs, and the body is divided into two areas by two lines drawn in underglaze iron. In the upper area, a mountain with three peaks is drawn in six different places using underglaze cobalt blue; the lower area is rounded with a wide triangular band. On top of each ear where a ring hangs down, the shape of chain is drawn in underglaze iron. The white porcelain glaze with blue tone is applied thinly and evenly on the surface. Called salloe in Korean, this vessel was used during the ceremonies performed at Jongmyo Shrine; its illustrations can be found in many historical books such as Sejong sillok (Annals of King Sejong) and Gukjo oryeui (Five Rites of State). As the only surviving white porcelain salloe, this is presumed to have been produced sometime between the late 15th century and the early 16th century.
