Description

These white porcelain placenta jars date back to the Joseon Period. The outer jar has total height of 35.2 cm, jar height of 30.6 cm, mouth diameter of 19.7 cm, and base diameter of 14.6 cm; the inner jar has total height of 25.1 cm, jar height of 21.7 cm, mouth diameter of 9 cm, and base diameter of 9.2 cm. The stone placenta tablet is 21 cm wide, 21 cm long, and 5.7 cm thick. A placenta jar was used as container for the placenta and the umbilical cord of a prince or a princess. Buried along with the jar is a stone on which the name and the date of birth of the newborn baby are recorded. The mouth of the outer jar opens outward; the jar is wide at the top, gradually narrowing downward. There are four small loops attached to the shoulder. It has a lid that looks like that of a cooking pot, with four holes drilled on its knob. Connected with the loops on the shoulder, the strings through these holes were supposed to hold the jars intact. The glaze is well-melted to give gloss and transparency. The inner jar is slightly smaller than the outer one, but it has almost the same shape as the latter. The placenta tablet is a piece of square black stone whose surface is inscribed with the year of production of the jars. The content of the inscription suggests that these jars were made prior to 1581. These jars and tablet provide important information on the shape, glaze type, and base clay of the white porcelain used by the royal family in the late 16th century.
