Description
According to the records kept at Seonunsa Temple, Manseru Pavilion was originally built in 1620 (the 12th year of the reign of King Gwanghae) and named Daeyangru. However, it was destroyed by fire and was rebuilt in 1752 (the 28th year of the reign of King Yeongjo). It is a well-preserved one-story building sized 9 kan by 2 kan with a gable roof fitted with bird wing-shaped brackets supporting the eaves. It is said that the original structure was a tower-shaped structure consisting of various stories, while the current one-story hall appears to reflect the trend of converting temple structures into spaces for worship of the Buddha during the late Joseon period. One noteworthy aspect of this hall is its sheer size, i.e. its 9-kan façade, which makes it the largest building of its kind in the country. The 3-kan middle section of the structure features a crossbeam supported by two outside columns, while the 3-kan sections on the right and left feature a high column erected in the middle and two beams facing each other on the column. Thus, the overall structure is supported by laying beams in two different ways for structural safety, with the importance of the middle section of the structure stressed. Natural wood whose end is two-pronged for the crossbeam placed on the high column in the middle section to produce an effect of having the crossbeams placed on the upper structure of the building look like dancing together
