Description

Daeungjeon Hall of Bonghwangsa Temple was originally built toward the end of the seventeenth century (late Joseon) and repaired on several occasions thereafter. Although the five-kan* building looks imposing, many of its parts including the roof-supporting bracket system display traces of repair work carried out in the late nineteenth century. The disharmony displayed by its façade, rear side, and roof-supporting bracket system reflects the difficult times experienced by Buddhism in this area during the late Joseon Period. One can only marvel at the embellishments dedicated to Buddha, such as the dancheong (colorful traditional decorative painting applied to wooden buildings and artifacts) and the representations of a phoenix on the slanted ceiling.
