Description
This well-balanced, flat bottle from the Joseon Period has height of 22.6 cm, mouth diameter of 3.8 cm, and base diameter of 8 cm. Its round body is formed skillfully into a flat, oval-shaped surface, with a slightly thin neck attached to it. White clay is sparsely painted on top of the dark cement-colored base clay. After that, all kinds of bird and flower design are engraved with thin lines on white clay, and the clay is later scraped off. The shoulder is rounded with a band of saw blade design. There is an abstract drawing of a large flower on both sides of the flat body. On one of the two remaining sides are six horizontal lines and a design of an irregular circle, with saw blade engraved between those lines. There is a picture of a bird playing under a tree on the other side. The rough base clay is seen below the body because this area has not been painted with white clay. The base is round but slightly bent. This jar is an excellent example of incised design of birds and flowers and is presumed to have been made in the early Joseon Period.
