Description

The Avatamsaka Sutra (The Flower Garland Sutra), Jin Version (23 volumes in 23 albums) (designated as Treasure No. 2073) is a part of the original copy (29 volumes in 29 albums) of the Mahavajpulya-BuddhaAvatamska Sutra that was found inside the Wooden Amitabha Buddha Triad kept at Wondangam Hermitage, Haeinsa Temple in Hapcheon. The original copies were printed using the relevant parts of the printing woodblocks of Goryeo (National Treasure No. 206) made in the mid-thirteenth century and kept at Haeinsa Temple. The scriptures contained in the Jin version of the Avatamsaka Sutra (Flower Garland Sutra) correspond to the printed copies designated as Treasure No. 2073, particularly with regard to the number of characters printed on each line of the main text, the shape and location of the characters, the types/character shapes used in the contents, the subjects marked at the end of the main text, and the head title, names and locations of the engravers, and layout of each part. Accordingly, we can see that the original copies of the Mahavajpulya-Buddha Avatamska Sutra (Treasure No. 2073) were printed and bound at a later date in three types (dark/light navy blue and yellow covers) by using the printing woodblocks of Goryeo kept at Haeinsa Temple (National Treasure No. 206) as the source text, and that the entire contents were printed completely, with the exception of Part 3, of which one page in Chapter 24 of the original copies is missing. The way in which the Avatamsaka Sutra is written and the copies are bound indicates that this version was printed sometime between the fourteenth and fifteenth century, and also that the dark navy blue cover was printed earlier than the light navy blue and yellow covers judging from the signs of wear of the characters used in the main text. Therefore, we can say that the Avatamsaka Sutra is a valuable material from the historic and cultural perspectives as it sheds considerable light on the philosophical ideas of the monks at Haeinsa Temple in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and the status of publication and printing at that time, as well as being a valuable source of information with which we can check the status of the scriptures included in the printing woodblocks of Goryeo (Treasure No. 206).
