Description

These calligraphy albums contain a collection of calligraphic works written by a great calligrapher of mid Joseon Han Ho (1543-1605) during the last phase of his life. Of the three albums that form a complete set, the first two albums contain postscripts the calligrapher wrote after he was discharged from the administrative head of Gapyeong-gun in 1602 and when he was serving as the prefectural head of Heupgokhyeon in 1604. The two volumes also contain artist’s seals, Seokbong (his style name literally meaning “Rocky Peak”) stamped on nine parts along with the dates when they were written. The poems are consisted of the verses composed by his close friends, including Choe Rip (pen-name: Ganidang, 1539-1612), his own writings, and classical Chinese poetic works. The calligraphic works are written in gold on either black or indigo paper and in a variety of traditional scripts such as regular, semi-cursive, and grass scripts. In the third volume, the calligrapher wrote a passage quoted from a Daoist scripture titled "Scripture of Clarity and Quiescence.” There are on the front cover of the album set two titles, “A Collection of the Works by Han Gyeong-hong,” and “Collected by Pojoldang,” revealing that these contain Han Ho’s calligraphic works collected by Kim Gwang-guk (pen-name: Pojoldang, 1725-?), a renowned art collector in the 18th century. There are also the collector’s four different seals stamped on the front and rear covers of each album. The calligraphic works collected in these albums are generally regarded as the best of all his handwritings known so far, featuring his style that reached its zenith in his last years and were reviewed by one of the finest connoisseurs of his time.
