Description

Myeongryundang Hall (lecture hall) of Gangneung Hyanggyo is a tower-shaped structure measuring 11 kan* by 2 kan, and is larger than any extant hyanggyo (government-run provincial Confucian school) lecture hall in the country. In the early seventeenth century, a building dating from the early Joseon period was repaired and put to use as a lecture hall, and has since been repaired on several occasions. Like other hyanggyo in the Gangwon-do area, the hall also has a traditional Hyanggyo jangnu (loft), but this one is larger and more structurally elegant than its counterparts.
