Description
Printed with woodblocks, this book with a commentary by Gwon Ram was published in 1462 (eighth year of the reign of King Sejo of the Joseon Dynasty). It consists of 3 poems by the founder emperor of the Ming Dynasty and 24 poems written by Gwon Geun at the request of the emperor while he was on an envoy mission to the empire. Gwon Geun (1352-1409, pen-name: Yangchon) served in various official posts after passing the state examination in 1368 (17th year of the reign of King Gongmin of the Goryeo Dynasty). In the early days of Joseon, he was bestowed the title meritorious subject in recognition of his major role in the establishment of the new dynasty. In 1396 (fifth year of the reign of King Taejo of the Joseon Dynasty), a report from Joseon to Ming earned the Chinese emperor’s ire, and the emperor summoned the author. Gwon Geun volunteered as an envoy and gave such a convincing excuse that the emperor calmed down and gave him a prize instead. The emperor asked Gwon Geun to write poems under the titles he gave, composing three poems himself to give them to the Joseon envoy, which is a very rare case. This book with its excellent calligraphic style and the Chinese emperor’s poems is of historical significance, serving as valuable materials in the study of Chinese literature, historical science, and human geography as well as the Ming-Joseon relations.
