Description
This book is, as the title suggests, a chronicle of emperors and kings in Korea and China written in rhymed verses by Yi Seung-hyu, a renowned scholar-official of late Goryeo, in 1287. The book is consisted of two volumes, and believed to have been printed during the early Joseon Period with woodblocks carved in 1360. The book is known to have been written with an aim to help the failing Goryeo Dynasty strengthen the sovereign authority of Goryeo rulers, restore order to the country through political reform, and regain national independence and sovereignty from the influence of the Yuan. The records of the origin of Korean people, the myth of Dangun in particular, contained in the book have exerted great influence upon the studies of early Korean history while the rhymed verses focused on various historical themes are regarded as archetypes of the narrative Gasa literature and, along with the story of King Dongmyeong in Collected Writings of Minister Yi of the Eastern State (Dongguk Isanggukjip) written by Yi Gyu-bo (1168-1241) and Songs of Great Kings (Yeokdaega) by an unknown author, had great influence upon various prose narratives written before the modern period. It is one of the three books printed with Goryeo woodblocks and designated as Treasures (Nos. 418, 895, and 1091), but widely regarded preserved in better condition compared with the rest two.
