Description
The Anseonghyanggyo Local Confucian School’s Daeseongjeon Hall, where sacrificial rites were offered to Confucius and the great Confucian scholars, was destroyed by fire during the Imjin War (1592-1598) and rebuilt in the mid-seventeenth century. Although it has been repaired on many occasions, its overall shape, structure, and designs are in good condition. The hall consists of an open space under a gable roof, and displays the typical form of a private ancestral shrine of the Joseon period, although its 5-kan* façade is rather large for such halls of a gun or hyeon(district) at that time. The traditional techniques used to build the hall make it a valuable material for scholars engaged in studies on the architecture of the mid-Joseon period. The visual effect achieved by the roof’s diverse crossbeams is typical of early seventeenth century architecture, when beams made of natural wood, some curved and others straight, were used as they were.
