Description

The Danseonghyanggyo Local Confucian School in Sancheong was built during the reign of King Injong (r. 1122 – 1146) of Goryeo to hold the mortuary tablets of the Confucian saints and to educate the local community. It was moved to its current location in Gyodong, Sancheong during the reign of King Sejong (r. 1418-1450) of Joseon. Up until the eighteenth century, the school (Daeseongjeon Hall) was only used as a venue to pay homage to the Confucian saints. However, with the completion of Myeongryundang Hall (lecture hall) in 1725, it finally acquired all the traditional features of a hyanggyo. The lecture hall has undergone numerous repairs since the school’s remodeling in 1725, but its unique tower-like structure has been preserved well. Its “工”-shaped roof (when viewed from above) and internal spatial structure are particularly rare and unusual features, making it a valuable material from the historic and academic perspectives.
