Description

Compiled by Zhizhao, a Buddhist monk of the Song Dynasty, Incheon anmok (Vision of Five Supreme Patriarchs) contains the basic principles of the Five great Buddhist sects of the period and their founders’ achievements. The book has also been widely read by Zen practitioners of Korea. It was published again in 1395 (fourth year of the reign of King Taejo of the Joseon Dynasty) by Master Muhak at Hoeamsa Temple based on an edition made in 1357 (sixth year of the reign of King Gongmin of the Goryeo Dynasty) by Jiang Jingang who was active in Yuan China. Printed on mulberry paper using printing woodblocks, this book was published by compiling together three volumes. This book, which measures 27 cm long and 16 cm wide, is relatively well-preserved, although some of its front and back parts are missing. It is of historical significance since it was published in the Joseon Dynasty by using printing woodblocks made in the Goryeo Period. It is also a valuable material in the study of Buddhism and bibliography of early Joseon.
