Description

The Miryanghyanggyo Local Confucian School exhibits the typical overall layout of a hyanggyo, with Daeseongjeon shrine on the left and Myeongryundang Lecture Hall on the right. Of the thirty or so remaining hyanggyo in Gyeongsangnam-do, four including this one in Miryang display this type of layout, while the rest are laid out with the lecture hall to the south of the shrine. The hall was destroyed by fire during the Imjin War (1592-1598) and rebuilt in 1602. Although it was dismantled and moved on two occasions, in 1617 and 1820, the original building materials dating from the mid-Joseon period - including the columns, bird wing-shaped brackets supporting the eaves of the roof, and door and windows - were all retained.
