Description
The Sangju Hyanggyo Local Confucian School comprises a group of buildings with an important feature associated with the architectural history of the Joseon Period, with a focus on changes in the layout of the buildings in a hyanggyo according to their functions, which differed from region to region. There is a clear record about the construction of the dongmu east shrine and seomu west shrine, i.e. spaces for enshrining mortuary tablets, of this school. The layout of the school buildings has remained unchanged since the renovation work carried out in the mid-Joseon period, and the buildings have retained their original shape and structural features. It is a conspicuous structure notable for its formalized, rigid layout and composition, and its sophisticated elevating composition that considers the slop.
