Description
The Dongmu east shrine and Seomu west Shrine of the Gyeongju Hyanggyo were renovated in 1604 and repaired in 1829 and 1995. These spaces, together with Daeseongjeon Hall, served as a shrine to deceased Confucian saints. Its façade measures 12 kan,* making it the longest existing structure of its kind. It has a large-sized façade space formed with crossbeams, but the decoration is extremely restrained. The Sinsammun Gate, i.e. the entrance to the space for paying homage to the deceased Confucian saints, measures 3 kan* by 2 kan and has a gable roof and a truss of five crossbeams. It follows the typical form of Pyeongsammun gate, a gate with three parts. It displays the typical features of this kind of entrance, including its doors, door frame, and hongsal (red, arrow-shaped embellishments placed vertically at the top of an entrance); and also has the characteristic features of architecture, including trimmed foundation stones, cornerstones, sinbangmok (a wooden item used to support the doorpost), and daegong (a short column set up on a cross beam as a support).
