Description
The Changpyeong Hyanggyo in Damyang has been repaired many times since its construction, but its form has remained unchanged since the repair work undertaken in 1689 (the 15th year of the reign of King Sukjong) according to the school records. Overall, the Confucian school building has a square-shaped layout, unlike other Confucian schools. The fence erected in front of Daeseongjeon Hall (where sacrificial rites are offered for Confucius and the great Confucian scholars) serves as a boundary between the hall and the courtyard. The dormitory buildings (dongjae and seojae) are positioned at right angles to Daeseongjeon Hall, outside the fence, while Myeongryundang (lecture hall) stands due south of Daeseongjeon Hall. The layout in which the lecture hall is placed in front of the shrine is a typical feature of the hyanggyo in Honam. The two dormitory wings are located very close to Daeseongjeon Hall due to the limited size of the school grounds. Roof-supporting bracket system of Daeseongjeon Hall is distinguished from the system of bird wing-shaped brackets used in other structures.
