Description

The Changpyeonghyanggyo Local Confucian School in Damyang has been repaired many times since its construction, but its form has remained unchanged since the repair work undertaken in 1689 (the 15th year of the reign of King Sukjong) according to the school records. Overall, the Confucian school building has a square-shaped layout, unlike other Confucian schools. The school’s Myeongryundang Hall (lecture hall) measures 4 kan* (façade) by 3 kan (left side) by 2 kan (right side) and has a gable roof (with the “八”-shaped side). However, it lacks a gable board on either side, leaving the interior wooden frame visible from the outside. Its façade, which faces Daeseongjeon Hall, is completely open as it lacks doors and window frames, which is rarely seen in the hyanggyo lecture halls of Honam Province.
