Description

Suncheonhyanggyo Local Confucian School was established in 1407 in Suncheon Provincial Office and eventually took control of similar schools in nearby areas, including the Yeosu, Gwangyang and Dolsan. The statement inscribed on the ridge beam of Daeseongjeon Hall (where sacrificial rites were performed for Confucius and the great Confucian scholars) dates from 1649. During the relocations of the building in 1780 and 1801, the builders used the main members of the building as they were, so the current building can be said to have been erected and repaired using materials dating from 1649. The school’s Daeseongjeon Hall measures 5 kan* by 3 kan and has an open façade. Compared to the halls of other hyanggyo, it is rather magnificent in terms of its structure, ornamental patterns, and design, and features a jusimpo (a system using brackets only on columns) and two bracket arms projecting outwards. The use of this type of bracket system to support the roof indicates that it was built in the 1700s or even earlier. Daeseongjeon Hall of the Suncheonhyanggyo Local Confucian School, together with its counterpart at the Najuhyanggyo Local Confucian School, is considered a representative wooden structure of Honam Province.
