Description

The Dosan Seodang Private School is regarded as a representative structure of the architectural ideal pursued by Confucian scholars during the sixteenth century. Its wooden-floored hall, ondol-heated room, and modest kitchen (3 kan* by 1 kan) gives an impression of what an honest and diligent scholar may have been like. The structure exhibits a neat outward appearance, characterized by windows of simple yet diverse shapes. After the death of YI Hwang (pen-name: Toegye), the structure was left as it was, and an additional structure was built behind it. The school has value both as a historic site associated with Toegye, one of the two greatest Confucian scholars of the Joseon period, and as an educational institution for young scholars.
