Description
Saddharmapundarika Sutra (Lotus Sutra) is the principal scripture of the Cheontae Order of Korean Buddhism. The main idea of the book is that the way to become a Buddha is open to everyone. Along with the Avatamsaka Sutra (Flower Garland Sutra), this sutra was a principal scripture that wielded great influence on the establishment of Buddhist thoughts in Korea. Saddharmapundarika Sutra was translated into Chinese by Kumarajiva of the Later Qin and annotated by Jiehuan of the Song Dynasty. During the Joseon Dynasty, this book was published in 1451 (first year of King Munjong’s reign) at the request of Myeongbin, who was a queen consort of the deceased King Taejong, in order to pray for the souls of King Taejong, King Sejong, Queen Soheon (King Sejong’s wife), and Myeongbin’s parents. It was printed on mulberry paper using woodblocks, with Volumes 5 to 7 bound into one book measuring 18.6 cm wide and 28.8 cm long.
