Description
Bronze Drum with the name Miruekwon engraved (Treasure No. 2109) displays letters made in depressed engraving, which tells us that it was a drum made to be placed at Mireukwon in 1190 (the 20th year of the reign of King Myeongjong of Goryeo). Mireukwon appears to be the name temporarily used instead of Injewon in Gongju, Chungcheongnam-do during the Goryeo Period. It is believed that the name Injewon came to be resumed by the time of compilation of Sinjeung Donggukyeojiseungram (Revised edition of the Culture and Geographic Records about Korea) in 1530. A bronze drum is chiefly used to announce the meal time or call people to a place. The Bronze Drum with the name Miruekwon engraved is one typical of the Goryeo Period. Inside the drum, lotus petals portrayed in relief engraving are laid out, displaying a good sense of balance. The Bronze Drum with the name Miruekwon engraved belongs to a group of relatively large-sized ones among its cousins dating from the 12th century. The decorative patterns display good sculptural skills. It shows traces of repair, which means that it is a valuable relic for those studying the technique of production of bronze books of the Goryeo Period. It is also a valuable relic, as it provides information on when it was made, who needed its production, and the name of the temple it was kept.
