Description

There are East and West five-story pagodas in Gwangju. Standing in the East, this stone pagoda is believed to have been built in the later Silla era. Many believe that Baekjusa Temple once stood near the pagoda, but there are no specific records about the temple. The pagoda consists of a two-tier stylobate and a five-story main body, which is typical of those made in the Silla era. The stylobate is made by fitting several stone blocks together, with each of the main bodies and roof stones made of a single stone block. Historians believe that it was built in the late Unified Silla Period, judging from the fact that each story has four-tier cornices except the first story, which has a five-tier one. A sarira case was found in the fourth story during the repair work performed in 1955 for the roof stone for the fourth story. The pagoda went through another repair work in 1961 when some of the damaged stone blocks were replaced by new ones. The pagoda retains the typical style of the Silla stone pagodas among the few five-story stone pagodas still existing in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do.
