Description
Jeong Mong-ju (1337-1392, pen-name: Poeun) was a civil official and an eminent scholar during the time of political chaos in the late Goryeo Period. As a chancellor, he managed all public affairs reasonably and impartially but was assassinated later at the plotting of Yi Bang-won because he opposed the movement of crowning Yi Seong-gye as king of the new dynasty. His poem Dansimga (Song of a Loyal Heart) shows very well his loyalty to the Goryeo Dynasty. This portrait is one of the three portraits of Jeong Mong-ju kept at Imgoseowon Confucian Academy, and it measures 98 cm wide and 169.5 cm long. In this full-size portrait, Jeong Mong-ju is sitting on a chair wearing light blue official robes as well as an official hat. The wrinkles on the clothes are depicted with blue lines, but not the carpet and background. It is badly damaged because the silk has worn out. Nonetheless, it still clearly shows the old painting style and has high value as the oldest portrait among the three portraits of Jeong Mong-ju.
