Description

A total of 12 large and small Buddha statues are carved in relief on a rock cliff behind the former site of Gaeryeongam Hermitage, which is below Goribong Peak reaching from Jeongnyeongchi Pass of Jirisan Mountain. Since they are on the uneven cliff, the relief works are not even and are seriously damaged. Note, however, that the three statues of Buddha are relatively well-maintained. The largest statue is 4 m tall and is regarded as the main Buddha statue, displaying the best carving skill. The face is carved in relief, but the pleats on the robes are finished with detailed lines following the technique of general rock-carved Buddha statues made in the Goryeo Period. These statues show the characteristics of the huge Buddha statue that prevailed during the Goryeo Period, such as large face, formalized features, bigger body, and simplified pleats. The smaller Buddha statues, with height of 1-2 m, also show the same carving technique; they are believed to have been made at the same period considering the same style in each part. Such group of Buddha statues is rare, and it has unique value.
