Description

This royal edict was issued to Jo On (1347-1417) to bestow him land as a gift. Jo On was designated as a meritorious subject for his contribution in the establishment of the Joseon Dynasty; he was rewarded again for his achievement in suppressing the First Princely Coup D’etat in 1398 (seventh year of King Taejo’s reign). The First Princely Coup D’etat was a dispute between Yi Bang-won, the fourth son of King Taejo, and his stepbrother Yi Bang-seok for the throne succession. A total of 29 persons were designated as meritorious subjects for having contributed to eliminating the party on Yi Bang-seok’s side. They were divided into two groups: 12 of the first grade and 17 of the second grade. Jo On belonged to the second grade group. This document recorded the location and area of the land bestowed upon him as a prize. This royal edict provides valuable information on the people who supported Yi Bang-won to expand his absolute power.
