Description

This book written in 1390 by Gwon Geun (pen-name:. Yangchon, 1352-1409), a great Neo-Confucian scholar and civil official in the Goryeo-Joseon transition period, had been an important guide to some of the key Confucian ideas in Explanation of the Diagram of the Supreme Ultimate (Taijitu Shuo) as well as the Four Books and Five Classics. The first edition of the book was published in 1397, seven years after the compilation, by Kim I-eum (?-1409) who was serving as the Magistrate (Dohobusa) of Jinju. The content of the book include illustrations about 21 topics including the "Chart of the Harmony of Nature between Heaven and Humanity," and five more topics contained in the Four Books, that is, Great Learning, Doctrine of the Mean, Analects, and Mencius. After the Gwon Geun’s death, his son Gwon Do discovered a manuscript that missed the first edition and published a revised edition in 1425 under the auspices of local administrators including Yi Su, then Mayor (Moksa) of Jinju, and Ban Mu-ryang, then Magistrate. The draft for the revised edition was written by Jeong Cheok, postscript by Byeon Gye-ryang (1369-1430), and proofreading by Jeong Sa-gyeom. The revised edition contains, in addition to the twenty-six topics, fourteen charts including that of trigrams for the twelve months and the method of divination on the basis of the charts. There are at the end of the book a postscript by Byeon Gye-ryang and a commentary containing detailed information about the background of the publication and those participated in the publication which the original edition had missed.
