Description

These two volumes of the Saddharmapundarika Sutra (The Lotus Sutra) are part of the seven volumes published in the fourth month in 1470 under the commission of Grand Royal Queen Dowager Jeonghui (1418-1483) who wished the devotion to help her deceased husband, King Sejo (r. 1455-1468), and offsprings, King Yejong (r. 1468-1469) and King Uigyeong (1445-1471) rest in peace in the other world. The book was printed with woodblocks carved by the greatest woodcarvers of their time including Gwon Don-il, Go Mal-jong, Jang Mak-dong, U In-su, Choe Geum-dong, Yi Yeong-san and Choe Deok-san, hence the fine printing quality. Unlike other books of the Lotus Sutra circulated at the time, this book has only the main text and no annotations made by a great Song scholar monk Jiehuan because it was printed not for circulation but for a religious ceremony alone. A postscript contained in the book designated as 1147-1 contains when and why this edition of sutra was published, providing interesting sources about the relationship between Buddhism and early Joseon royals as well as valuable bibliographical information.
