Description

Saddharmapundarika Sutra (Lotus Sutra) is the principal scripture of the Cheontae Order of Korean Buddhism. The main idea of the book is that the way to become a Buddha is open to everyone. Along with the Avatamsaka Sutra (Flower Garland Sutra), this sutra was a principal scripture that wielded great influence on the establishment of Buddhist thoughts in Korea. This book was translated into Chinese by Kumarajiva of the Later Qin, annotated by Jiehuan of the Song Dynasty, and printed on mulberry paper with woodblocks. Volumes 1 to 3 are bound into one book, which measures 16.5 cm wide and 27.5 cm long. It has a frontispiece illustration summarizing the contents of this sutra and a painting of a divine warrior who wards off the devil. A record at the bottom of the painting states that it was engraved by Boneung. Although the bottom corner of the first page is damaged, the main part is fine. The grammatical markings on the sentences show that someone used the book. According to a record at the end of this book, Hwang Jin-son wrote the text, and Sinmin (a monk of Ongnyongsa Temple) and Sinui (a monk of Daeseonsa Temple) gave a donation for the publication. It is the same edition as the woodblock-printed book among the Excavated Relics from the Wooden Seated Child Manjusri of Sangwonsa Temple, Pyeongchang (Treasure No. 793).
