Description

This Bhaisajyaguru Buddha Triad was carved on a cliff at Bangeosan Mountain in 801 (the 2nd year of the reign of King Aejang of the Unified Silla Dynasty). The principal statue, the Bhaisajyaguru Buddha, has a long oval face and small shoulders, and holds a plate of medicine in his left hand. Despite the huge body, the statue does not give an impression of power, in line with the change from the stiff energetic ideal realism of the eighth century to a more realistic form. Meanwhile, the two assisting Bodhisattva statues stand facing the principal Buddha. The one on the left is a Sunlight Bodhisattva characterized by a strong masculine image, while the one on the right is a Moonlight Bodhisattva, adorned with a moon-pattern carving between the eyebrows. Thanks to the legible inscription on the rock, the construction date is clearly known. It is a valuable resource for research on the history of sculpture during the Unified Silla Period.
