Description
These documents and materials were handed down from generation to generation of the head family of Ryu Seong-ryong (1542-1607), whose pen-name was Seoae. Ryu Seong-ryong was a government official during the mid-Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). He was also a follower of Yi Hwang and studied together with Kim Seong-il.He passed the civil servant examination in 1566 and was appointed to many important posts (such as third, second, and chief state councilor, Minister of Personnel, etc.). In this capacity, he realized that the Japanese army would attack Joseon and hence appointed the Admiral Yi Sun-sin and General Gwon Yul to prepare for war. He also dedicated himself to beefing up the country’s military strength by commissioning the manufacture of weaponry such as cannons and the construction of fortified walls. He was also highly adept in the field of moral philosophy and was a good writer with a great handwriting style. He was granted the posthumous title of Munchung and his memorial tablet was enshrined in Byeongsanseowon Confucian Academy in Andong. The documents are related to the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 and include manuscripts that he wrote while he was serving as provincial supreme commander, escorting the king, and controlling military affairs during the Japanese Invasion. The list of documents is as follows: 1. Jinsarok 2. Nanhujamnok 3. Geunpokjip 4. Jungheungheongeun 5. Gunmun deungnok 6. Jeongwonjeongyo 7. Jeongjo eoje dangjang seohwacheop jemunbu Chaejegongbal 8. Hoseong gongsin rokhun gyoseo These are valuable documents for understanding the country’s situation during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. They were originally designated as the “Documents of Andong Ryu Clan,” but in 1991, they were renamed as the “Documents of Ryu Seong-ryong's Family.” The first edition of Jingbirok (The Book of Corrections) had originally been included among the family documents, but was designated as National Treasure No.132.
