Description
This book on medicine and pharmacology was compiled in the 7th year of King Taejo’s reign (1398) by referencing medical experiences and books of that time and was published by Kim Hui-seon, the provincial governor of Gangwon-do, at the Gangwon gamyoung (Gangwon-do Provincial Office) in the 8th year of King Taejo’s reign. This book is the sixth volume of Hyangyak jesaeng jipseongbang (Collection of Native Prescriptions for Saving Lives), which consisted of 30 volumes. Each volume was printed in different sizes of wood block, and there are a lot of omissions in the book. Thus, it is difficult to read the entirety of the book. According to Gwon Geun's Yangchonjip and Kim Seong-su's Study on Development of Oriental Medicine Bibliography, however, we can roughly infer the background of publication and the scope of prescriptions covered by the book. In other words, the entire 30 volumes listed the symptoms of 338 kinds of diseases and 2,803 kinds of prescriptions. They provided an overall description of the medical experiences and suggested prescriptions for each disease along with a supplementary explanation. This book served as a foundation for Hyangyak jipseongbang, which was published in the 15th year of the reign of King Sejong the Great (1433). It has great value since it developed prescriptions suitable for the physical constitution of Korean people by using herbs growing in Korea.
