Description

Jabi doryang chambeop is a ritual that is believed to bless practitioners and to free them from agony if they lead the spirit of the dead to nirvana. Thus, Jabi doryang chambeop refers to a Buddhist ritual of repenting of one’s sins while chanting Buddhist scriptures. Since the book was reorganized in the Yuan Dynasty, it has the title “Sanggyo jeongbon (revised version).” At present, 5 books of the Goryeo edition have been designated as treasure. During the Joseon Dynasty, the books were reprinted, and new editions were published. This version is a newly published copy that was wood block-printed during the reign of King Seongjong of the Joseon Dynasty. It consists only of Volumes 6-10 out of the entire 10 volumes. The author of the book is indicated as a group, and the last page of each has the sound and meaning of Chinese characters. The last page of Volume 10 has a postscript written by Kim Su-on in August 1474 and the names of contributors. Subsequently, there is a record on the year of printing production, which was added in 1488 (19th year of King Seongjong’s reign). The record, written in Eulhae-ja letter, states thus: “Eight items including Wongakhoedo, which was made during King Taejo’s reign, were repaired, and 14 books including Beophwagyeong, Chamggyeong, and Jijanggyeong were published.” Based on the record, this book seems to be one of 14 books of Chamgyeong printed at that time. The last page has a record about the publication. Even though this book is a latter edition, it shows very well the characteristics of the first printing with clarity of black ink. Among books that are similar to this book, Jabi doryang chambeop Volumes 1-5 has been designated as Treasure No. 1193 and is a collection of the Hansol Paper Museum. This book shows very well the printing technology in the late 15th century, having great value in the sense that the early and late editions can be compared with this book.
