Description

This Sakyamuni Buddha Triad consisting of statues of Buddha and two Bodhisattvas is cast on a mandorla that is kept in the Buyeo National Museum. The rear of the mandorla bears an inscription concerning the story of a person named Jeong Ji-won, who made this gilt-bronze Buddha statue in the hope that his deceased wife would go to the next world peacefully. The principal image of Buddha has a long plump face with distinctive eyes, nose, and mouth. The robe covering both shoulders has a U-shaped fold and hangs down heavily, while the folds covering his arms extend widely to the sides like bird’s wings. His palms are facing forward while his fingertips are turned downwards. Two assisting Bodhisattva statues with their hands clasped together stand on each side of the mandorla, which represents the light radiating from the main Buddha. The Bodhisattva on the right is similar to the main statue and wears long clothes that stretch out to the edge of the mandorla; whereas all that remains of the Bodhisattva on the left is a face, as most of the body is missing. The top of the dugwang (light radiating from the head) is embossed with a small Buddha sitting in a lotus flower and making an offering. This style of carving used for this Buddha triad looks similar to that of the Gilt-bronze Standing Buddha with Inscription of the "Seventh Yeonga Year" (National Treasure No. 119) made during the Goguryeo Dynasty, i.e. in the popular Buddhist style of the Northern Wei Dynasty of China. In terms of its overall form it is similar to the Gilt-bronze Standing Buddha Triad with Inscription of the "Gyemi Year" (National Treasure No. 72) and the Gilt-bronze Standing Buddha Triad with Inscription of the "Sinmyo Year" (National Treasure No. 85), but its carving, patterns, and structure are simpler.
