Description

The Saddharmapundarika Sutra, also known as The Lotus Sutra, is the basic sutra of the Cheontae Order of Korean Buddhism, whose main idea is that all people can attain Buddhahood in their present form. Along with the Avatamsaka Sutra, the Lotus Sutra, the most widely published of all Buddhist sutras distributed in Korea, has had a profound influence on the establishment of Buddhism in Korea. The book consists of volumes 1 and 2 (out of ten volumes) of Hyejeong's annotations on the Lotus Sutra) bound together as a single work. It is printed on mulberry paper with dimensions of 36 cm (L) by 35 cm (W), and appears to be a reprint of the Goryeo Dynasty’s Sokjanggyeong (Supplement to the Tripitaka). At the end of each volume of the book, the publishing record indicates that it was originally published with the writing of Nam Gung-ye in 1095 (the 1st year of the reign of King Heonjong of the Goryeo Dynasty) and reprinted by the Gangyeongdogam, a governmental office established in 1461 (the 7th year of the reign of King Sejo of the Joseon Dynasty) for the translation and publication of Buddhist texts into Korean.
