Description
This book is a commentary version to Zuozhuan. Im Yo-su of the Song Dynasty added commentaries that are easy to read to Zouzhuan, whose commentaries written by Du Ye (228-284) were difficult to understand, to aid in beginner scholars’ understanding. This book is also called Guhae for short. Im Yo-su’s commentary version was widely used during the Song and Yuan Dynasties and even during the Ming Dynasty of China and subsequently introduced to the Joseon Dynasty. It was printed with copper typeset during King Taejong’s reign and later reprinted several times during the reigns of King Sejong and King Ddanjong. This book was published in the 13th year of the reign of King Sejong (1431) of the Joseon Dynasty in Cheongdo District under the sponsorship of Cheongdo governor Ju So after acquiring Jwassijeon (Zuozhuan) through the good offices of Gyeongsang-do governor Jo Chi and government official An Jil. This is 1 book of 11 volumes, with volumes 1 to 59 missing. According to the postscript and publication record at the end of the book, the engraving of wood blocks was started in the 8th month of the 13th year of King Sejong’s reign (1431) and was completed after 3 months in the same year. The first page has been partially damaged, and the cover is refurbished, but the overall condition of the book is relatively good. Compared to the somewhat damaged publication record of the book, which has been designated as Treasure No. 1208-1, this book has a clear publication record. It is made in the side grafting style. This book was published several times and was widely read during the Joseon Dynasty, but there is no record about the entire volume. Even though it is 1 book of only 11 volumes, the postscript and publication record as well as the main figures and artisans involved in the publication remain in detail; thus, this book is considered to be valuable material in studying bibliography during King Sejong’s reign. In particular, compared to the book designated as Treasure No. 1208-1, this book is well-preserved; hence its great significance in studying bibliography.
