Description

Seowon refers to a private educational establishment where Confucianism was taught and commemorative services for the most respected scholars were held during the Joseon Dynasty. The Dosan Seowon Confucian Academy was dedicated to the teachings of Yi Hwang, who was one of the most influential scholars and government officials in the mid Joseon. His mortuary tablet is housed in the Sangdeoksa Shrine located in the rearmost section of the Dosan Seowon. Solely dedicated to Yi Hwang, the shrine was built in 1574, in the 7th year of the reign of King Seonjo, but had to be repaired in 1969. The shrine measures three kan (a unit of measurement referring to the distance between two columns) in the front and two on the side under a hip-and-gable roof. The front gate building of the shrine measures three kan in the front and two on the side under a gable roof. Although the gate was built at the same time with the Sangdeoksa Shrine, its wooden columns are longer than those of the other buildings in the compound because of the elevated foundation with stone steps. The entire earthen wall surrounding the shrine was replaced with a stone wall during the repair work in 1969. These seemingly simple, modest structures are an important architectural heritage of the Joseon Dynasty.
