Description
This is a seated Buddha relief carved into a large rock, with an octagonal stone wedged into the rock over the head to protect the face. Although stern-faced as if to show the strong willpower of Buddha, there is a gentle smile on his lips. The robust physique is in a stiff posture, but it still has a beauty of form. The robe across the left shoulder has parallel folds and geometrical abstraction. The left hand is placed on the stomach while the right hand is on the crossed leg. The pedestal is engraved with lotus blossoms. The stern face, flat torso, abstract features and grandeur of this seated Buddha are some of the unique characteristics of the Buddha images carved into a rock face during the early Goryeo period.
