Description
This portrait portrays Son So (1433-1484), who was appointed jeokgae gongsin (meritorious subject) in recognition of his efforts to suppress a revolt led by Yi Si-ae in 1467 and who later became the Governor of Andong and Jinju. Measuring 105 cm wide and 160 cm long, the portrait is painted on silk. The figure is looking to the right and sitting on a chair. He is wearing the official hat and robe, and his facial features are depicted with brown lines. The sleeves of the white underwear are visible including the lining of the left leg part and green underwear, with the contour of his robes portrayed with straight lines. He is wearing white leather shoes. The portrait has not been well-preserved, so many parts are damaged. Still, the colors and contour of the portrait and the writings on the portrait are quite clear. The portrait depicts him receiving the title of jeokgae gongsin, but it was painted in the 7th year of King Seongjong’s reign (1476), which was 10 years after he received the title. Considered one of the best portraits depicting a meritorious subject during the early Joseon Dynasty, it shows the painting style of the early Joseon Dynasty; thus, it is very valuable.
