Description

The relics include classical books and old documents owned by Princess Myeongan (1664-1687), the third daughter of King Hyeonjong of the Joseon Dynasty, as well as artifacts from Myeongangung Palace where the princess used to reside. The name of the princess was Onhui; she was married to O Tae-ju in the 5th year of King Sukjong’s reign (1679). Among the classical books are a collection of Hangeul letters sent by King Hyeonjong, Empress Myeongseong, and King Sukjong, various woodblock-printed books, an album of poetry and prose written by O Tae-ju’s family, and a collection of congratulatory messages written on King Yeongjo’s 60th birthday by the eldest son of the Crown Prince and vassals wishing for King Yeongjo's long life. Among the old documents are various lists of goods and petition letters. The artifacts mostly consist of commodities sent to Princess Myeongan from the Royal Court. In particular, the naming letter of Princess Myeongan is the only currently existing one of its kind from the royal court family. In other words, a wide variety of artifacts related to Princess Myeongan provide valuable information in studying the royal court life of the princess at that time. They also have high artistic value as well as academic value in studying calligraphy. In addition, they serve as valuable materials in studying the royal lifestyle, society, and economy.
