Description
This portrait portrays Kim Jin (pen-name: Cheonggye, 1500-?), who was a scholar during the Joseon Dynasty. It measures 109 cm wide and 142 cm long. He passed the national examination in the 20th year of King Jungjong’s reign (1525) and got appointed up to ijopanseo (minister of the Ministry of Personnel). This portrait was painted on ramie cloth. The figure is looking to the right and sitting on a chair with the two hands held together inside the sleeves. He is wearing a green robe and a tall, broad-brimmed felt hat on his head. His face is depicted with several lines, and his eyes are portrayed very thin. The meditative face and overall mood of the picture give a strong impression that he was a scholar. The tiger skin cushion on which he is sitting is depicted as plain without any volume effect, but it does not look awkward. What is unique about this portrait is that it used both black ink lines and other various color lines, such as brown and red. Produced in the 5th year of King Seonjo’s reign (1572), this portrait depicts the figure so accurately that it shows the character and dignity of the figure very well. Along with the portrait of Yi Hyeon-bo, who was a civil official during the Joseon Dynasty, this portrait is considered valuable since it shows the image of aristocrats in the Andong region.
