Description
This document is a royal edict appointing military official Jo Heup (?-1429) as commander of the Left Border Army on the 7th month, 13th day of the 6th year of King Taejong’s reign (1406). Jo Heup was a grandson of Jo Min-su who served as munhasijung (Prime Minister) and was appointed Changseong buwongun (Prince of the Court from Changseong) during the late Goryeo Dynasty. He was bestowed land in the first year of the reign of King Taejong (1401) for his meritorious service during Banggan's Revolt in the second year of King Jeongjong’s reign (1400) and was promoted to high official rank in the military. Since the later years of King Sejong’s reign, the royal order had been changed to the royal edict; the seal had also changed from the royal seal (seal of the Joseon Dynasty’s king) to the Seal of the King's order. This document is regarded as a valuable material in studying the style of documents, conducting historical research on the Royal Seal, and investigating the system of personnel management during the early Joseon Dynasty.
