Description

These documents are the possessions of the Samujeong branch of Milseong Bak's Family. They had been given to Bak Gyeong-sin (1539-1594), who was a military official during the reign of King Seonjo of the Joseon Dynasty, to his two sons, Ji-nam and Cheol-nam. Bak Gyeong-sin passed the first course of the state military examination when he was 31 years old in the 2nd year of King Seonjo’s reign (1569), topping the overall state military examination when he was 35 years old. Later, he was appointed commander. He escorted the King in his escape during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. He and his sons mobilized a voluntary army and defended their hometown Cheongdo against the Japanese army. After the Japanese Invasion, he was appointed most meritorious subject. His first son Bak Ji-nam (1565-1626) joined his father’s voluntary army and participated in the battles in Cheongdo and Miryang. After the Japanese Invasion, he was also appointed second-rank meritorious subject. Bak Cheol-nam (1565-1611), the younger brother of Bak Ji-nam, joined his father’s voluntary army and rendered distinguished military services. After the Japanese Invasion, he was appointed second-rank meritorious subject. The mortuary tablets of the two sons and their father are enshrined at Imhoseowon Confucian Academy. These documents include one book of certificate of meritorious subject issued to Bak Gyeong-sin, 2 royal edicts issued to Bak Gyeong-sin and his wife during King Sunjo’s reign, and 13 notes of meritorious subject certificates issued to Bak's two sons Ji-nam and Cheol-nam.
