Description
This rock-carved Buddha statue is on the right side of the entrance to the Donghwasa Temple. This statue, located high above the ground, looks as if it is descending down from the sky. It has a plump, flat face. There are three wrinkles in the neck and the shoulders are square. The right hand is on top of the knee and pointing downwards. The left hand is held in front of the belly button with the palm facing up. The robe covering both shoulders has thin parallel folds at regular intervals. The body mandorla is in the shape of a narrow boat. The edges have flame patterns, while the head and the body mandorlas are distinguished by two lines. The pedestal is on top of a cloud. The cloud patterns are very realistic, giving this statue an active, vivid aura. The plump face and small body, decorative pedestal and halos are some of the unique characteristics of the late Unified Silla period in the 9th century.
